Ms. Bellinger's book made me laugh out loud and helped me consume several six-packs of Alaskan Beer. I have lived in Alaska for nearly 20 years, count that as 20 Alaskan winters. I have lived in some of the places she wrote about, I have been charged by moose. I can identify with it all. I said, "...how true" and laughed out loud so often I woke up the dog. (The dog is a mutt, best described as large and brown. She was born in Alaska and thus is an Alaska Native.) As I read and enjoy 'The Frozen Toe Guide...' I enjoy my favorite beer, anything Alaskan Brewing Company from Juneau. Reading that book cost me 2 six-packs. I scored 22 on the Are You A Real Alaskan? quiz. Has the log splitter been awarded? As soon as the snow melts a little more I'm going to have a breakup party and play The Blue Tarp Challenge. Our family will be relocating to Alaska in a few months, so naturally I have been trying to find out more information about what the locals are like, what to expect, etc...

This book was leg-slapping funny but it was also quite informative; I was excited to find out about several parks to visit, fairs to attend, races to participate in and food to try.

I got this for my sister in Oregon so she could try to understand what I'm up to in a more lighthearted way. As a ten year alaskan, this book was totally relatable. A lot of Fairbanks in there....worth reading for sure.
I'm a staunch conservative type - probably too conservative for North Pole - and the author of this book, Brookelyn Bellinger, is quite clearly a wacky hippie.

I love her.

She's a hippie, all right, but she's not the kind of hippie that won't wear fur in Alaska because it offends some people of Higher Consciousness in southern California. She's an authentic free-thinker who believes that you should be free, too. And this short book does more to demonstrate the connection between self-reliance and freedom than any political essay ever could.

You know that Alaska is cold and, if you reflect upon it, you won't be surprised when she tells you that it is dark, too, with the sun staying below the horizon for twenty hours per day in the depths of winter. But I bet that you didn't know about the peculiar hazards attached to using an outhouse when the temperature is 20 below. Or that the quickest way to get rich in Alaska is learning the art of windshield repair and replacement. Or that house-sitting in the Aleutians is ... well, you just have to read that part. I won't give it away. It's too good.

Brookelyn is real and free and very, very funny. Both the Alaska she describes and the world inside her head are places you should visit. Highly recommended.
I bought this book on a splurg for something different. It sounded interesting, and sure enough I wasn't disappointed. This book is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Informative, insightful, humorous, this book has it all. With ever page turn I feel like I could make it in Alaska too... if I weren't such a nature wimp. You have to be a strong, brave, and nature loving kind of person to survive in Alaska. Not to mention creative for those long winters.
This book is highly reccomended for anyone planning a trip to Alaska, or anyone who's just looking for a good read. ^_^
