Desert Rising was an entertaining read. Sulis and Kadar are great characters with an amazing relationship between them. The way they tease each other really makes them feel like siblings who have grown together. The lore about the gods in this world is very fleshed out with rich details of how the deities came to be, how the temple works and how acolytes are chosen. I wish I’d gotten more from Djinn!! I love the idea of feli and bonding. Quite a fun read!
When I started reading this, I thought this could something fun and original seeing how the setting appeared to be desert oriented opposed to the traditional high fantasy setting. But sadly this book falls to every cliche fantasy story trope imaginable which makes it so dull and predictable that it was hard to finish. If you never read a fantasy before I guess it would be okay, but for people who read a lot this is not good at all.
Desert Rising is a solid start to what promises to be a rousing epic fantasy series. With bickering gods, giant sentient feline companions, and cultures on the brink of war, the worldbuilding is as deep as they come. The main characters are fully fleshed out and interesting in their own unique ways, and the writing is top notch. Like many books that are the beginning of a planned series, I felt the plot spent a little too much time setting up the conflict to come, yet there was still enough tension to keep me engaged. Overall, it was very satisfying and I can't wait to see what comes next!
Really enjoyed this book. I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend. Wow - once I picked it up, I had difficulty putting it down. I loved the world that Grant created - complex, coherent, believable, exotic and yet slightly familiar. I really appreciate strong female characters, and this book has a number (as well as great male characters). Also embodiment the storytelling. I felt like I had the info to get oriented to this different world without feeling like "oh - it's time for the exposition". I just bought the next two books - looking forward to finding out what's next.
You would not know this was Ms. Grant's first foray into the fantasy genre if you had not been told. The story is well woven and powerful. Her characters are very human and yet otherworldly in their interactions making this a page turner. Be prepared to forget the passing of time and lose yourself in the intensity of upheaval on many levels. Be ready to love the characters as they struggle to make headway against the way things have always been done. You will want the sequel.
Desert Rising has a fresh fantasy setting. Both familiar and strange, the author synthesizes a number of different cultures but it's impossible to name just one place or time as her source and that lends mystery and exoticism to the narrative. Like any good allegory, today's issues are on display but in a clever disguise -- we get a heroine whose aspirations are challenged by her sex and her desert origins as well as her mother's mysterious yet similar past. The most appealing part for me is the creation of a new religion in which acolytes are paired with a feli, a giant cat, who chooses his or her partner and is a link to the The One who is male or female, depending on who describes her/him/it. Beneath the One are four other gods who are as quarrelsome as the Greek deities of the Iliad. The usual struggles of humankind are here in our endless need to subject and misread "the other" as well as the destructive desire to maintain our own status, even at the expense of others. Romance is a part of the complex fabric of this tale, even more so for the heroine's twin brother, Kadar. And as for fabrics, much lush attention is paid to clothing, cloth, sewing and ritual wear. I need my fantasies to offer some visuals, and this ones does.
I'll have to get to the sequels, but I'm betting author might do a spin-off which concentrates just on the feli. Cat fanciers will certainly cozy up to and purr over this epic fantasy.
