This sequel to the enthralling Cabinet of Earths picks up right where the first book left off, with a shocking intrusion of magic into the wall of the Bulgarian Embassy in Paris. The story starts with a bang and never lets up. Maya Davidson and her Bulgarian friend Valko Nikolov are drawn into an adventure where gargoyles leave their stone perches and roost on kids' balconies; dust organizes itself into menacing shapes; and the worst violin player EVER turns out to have a very important power. The magic is written with heart and imagination, and Maya's quest to break free of a binding spell is thrilling. What I really love about this book, though, is the insight into what makes people special - whether it's magic in their blood, or the culture they come from, their charm or their sometimes embarrassing forthrightness. That and the beautiful, lyrical writing, of course. A Box of Gargoyles is entertaining, warm, funny, and a great read from the first paragraph to the last. Not just for kids, either - deserves to be read by adults who love the classic fantasy adventures too.
