Once you get past the premise and start reading, the writing reels you in. Ms. Smith is a writer who has a remarkable way with words. If she grabs you, she doesn't let go.Hush is determined to make her family apple orchard in North Georgia pay. Married to a local race-car legend, she knows the marriage is a mistake from the beginning. She only stays in it for the sake of the child she adores. She and her husband are careful to show their son only the good side of their marriage. Even when her husband dies, Hush won't reveal the truth.
In the middle of making the Sweet Hush apple famous throughout the world, she finishes raising the boy, sends him off to Harvard, and is shocked senseless when he drops out to bring home his girl friend. A girl friend who's the daughter of the President and First Lady.
Hush knows exactly how politicians are and doesn't like them. The First Couple don't particularly want an apple farmer in the family. Whoops. Too late. The kids are married and pregnant.
So the President sends his nephew, a clandestine operative, to look after his daughter and unborn grandchild. The nephew takes one look at Hush and falls pretty hard. And Hush? She can't help but be drawn to a man the bees like.
But that doesn't mean she's gonna let her kid get hurt.
Like I said, starts off with a shaky premise but boy, does it deliver. Hush's voice is so strong I want to meet her.
Good read.

I generally prefer science fantasy novels but will read any Southern romance novel by Deborah Smith. Maybe it's my southern blood but a good read with lots of love, great characters, a little adversity and a strong woman will get me every time. It kind of makes me wish my name was
SukiBelle because these stories only happen to women with great Southern names but.....Oh well.
Read it. You'll smile and tear up. I'm sorry that I have finished it.
A very satisfying read in (almost) every way, Sweet Hush is one those that you never want to end. I fell in love with every character. The language is magical, especially in the first half, when "literary, and "poetic" come to mind. The second half is more about the story, which while it is totally unlikely, is a rollicking, romantic, carefully crafted and enjoyable tale.
My only complaint would be the sometimes careless editing that seemed to happen in some sections. Distracting and disappointing in a book which otherwise was very special.
By the end of this book I thought I knew Hush personally and could totally identify with her. The characters were well developed. You get just enough information to know them but not too much so that some things are left to the imagination which pulls you even more into the story. Only issue was there were a number of typos as you got closer to the end.
One of my favorite books by Deborah Smith. Her characters are always colorful, strong women with family values and she provides wonderful history of the southeast. Her writing paints beautifully visual pictures and the story keeps you interested to see what happens next to this lovable cast of characters.
Absolutely FAB-U-LOUS!!! "A Place to Call Home" was the first Deborah Smith book I ever read... in 1998!
Though I have read... and thoroughly enjoyed... every one of her books I could get my hands on since then,
"Home" has remained my favorite... UNTIL NOW.
"Home" is now a close "Second"... but,"Sweet Hush" is my new #1.
Loved the History of all the Hushes... the dynamics between our Hush and First Lady, Edwina... "HushPuppy"...
all of it!
Deborah Smith has quickly become one of my new favorite writers because of her sensitive and well developed characters. She tells the most humane stories. I loved Hush and Jacob, the simmering energy, angst and understanding between them along with the tension that prevails because of the usual family dynamics that make us all crazy at times. When she writes, you feel like you're right there, living it through the characters. I've enjoyed all of her books, but by far, this is my favorite. I'm rereading as we speak, er, read.
I usually read fantasy and sci-fi with romance thrown in but every now and again I come across a summary that intrigues me. This one caught my attention and I figured why not. If it doesn't get me by the first chapter then I won't read the rest. I started this book at 9pm and at 1am realized with regret I would have to read the rest another time since I had to be conscious at work in a few hours. I just finished it a few minutes ago. A great read. Left me a bit sad but mostly laughing and hopeful for the future of the wonderful characters the author dreamed up. Also quite a bit envious of the amazing family they call their own. They embody what I wish my family to be. If a bad choice is made with the best of intentions then forgiveness should be given the same way. I'm going to be looking for more of Deborah's books. Give her a shot.
